Amelia Hamer takes on Monique Ryan in Kooyong contest

Former Treasurer Josh Frydenberg will join the fight for the Liberals to win back his old seat after the party selected Amelia Hamer to contest Kooyong at the next federal election.

Ms Hamer, 31, is an executive at a fintech company and the grand-niece of former Victorian premier Rupert 'Dick' Hamer.

The prized seat in Melbourne's inner east was held by the Liberal Party from 1945 to 2022, until Independent candidate Monique Ryan won it on a margin of less than three per cent.

Some 300 party faithful took part in the vote on Saturday to choose the next Liberal candidate at Hawthorn Town Hall, with Ms Hamer reportedly winning the vote by a significant majority.

"Congratulations Amelia Hamer on winning today’s Liberal Party Preselection for Kooyong," Mr Frydenberg posted to X, formerly Twitter.

"Looking forward to supporting you and the Party in the campaign ahead."

Opposition leader Peter Dutton described Ms Hamer as an outstanding candidate.

"Amelia Hamer has a breadth of experience and will be a champion for the people of Kooyong," Mr Dutton posted to X.

Ms Hamer studied at Oxford university before working in banking, venture capital and technology.

She nominated cost-of-living pressures and helping people become home owners as key issues she hopes to address.

“I am putting my hand up for Kooyong to fight to ensure future generations can access the same opportunities that past generations have had," Ms Hamer said in a statement.
