Australians Raygun, J Attack win Olympic breaking spot

Raygun and J Attack have written themselves into history as Australia's first Olympic breakdancers by taking out the Oceania Breaking Championships.

The pair took out the solo Bboy and Bgirl categories at Sydney's Town Hall on Saturday to clinch two direct places at the next year's Paris Olympics.

Finishing in the top spot following the preliminary finals on Friday, Rachael "Raygun" Gunn continued her journey to Paris with a captivating showcase of power moves, freezes and original moves across six rounds in three battles.

A Macquarie University lecturer by day, the 36-year-old swept the floor with precise footwork and energetic down moves to win two rounds out of three and triumph over 18-year-old Molly "Holy Molly" Chapman in the battle for gold.

Raygun has been touted as the nation's leading contender for an Olympic berth since the announcement of the sport's inclusion three years ago.

The nation's top-ranked Bgirl, she has represented Australia at the sport’s last three world championships.

The prodigious 16-year-old Jeff "J Attack" Dunne enjoyed a similarly dominant performance on Saturday, convincingly taking out all three rounds in his semi-finals battles against Christopher "Cielo" Cielo and Ba Duc "Mighty Duck" Hoang".

Going head-to-head against 15-year-old Benji "BenMX" Cogdell-Baird in the gold medal battle, J Attack pulled every possible move - from head spins to flips - to win over the six judges in all three rounds and become an Olympian.

Bgirls Holy Molly, Hannah Georgina Belet and Geraldina "G-Clef" Hnitko and Bboys BenMX, Gerard "Kid Tek" Cabellon and Mighty Duck will head to the Olympic qualifier series in Shanghai and Budapest next year for another shot at qualifying for Paris.
