Copper Queens edge Costa Rica for first World Cup win

Barbra Banda has scored the 1000th goal in Women's World Cup history as Zambia secured their first victory on the sport's biggest stage with a 3-1 triumph over Costa Rica.

With both sides already eliminated by Group C heavyweights Japan and Spain, a maiden win at the tournament loomed as a consolation prize.

The Copper Queens led early through Lushomo Mweeba's third-minute strike and the dangerous Banda doubled the advantage from the penalty spot just after the half-hour.

Melissa Herrera pulled one back for Costa Rica two minutes after half-time and Las Ticas had a raft of chances throughout a dominant second period.

But they couldn't find an equaliser and paid the price when Rachael Kundananji was teed up by Banda, settling the contest with a cool finish in second-half stoppage time.

The result left Costa Rica at the bottom of the group without a point, still searching for their first World Cup victory after two draws and a loss in their only previous appearance at the tournament in 2015.

One of eight World Cup debutants this year, Zambia were thrashed 5-0 by both Japan and Spain, and entered the tournament ranked 41 places below Costa Rica at No.77.

But they were on the front foot early in Waikato and took a deserved lead when defender Mweeba turned home a corner with a cushioned volley.

Banda was a constant threat and slotted home from the spot in the 31st minute after she was fouled by Katherine Alvarado.

Costa Rica went close to scoring with a flurry of chances late in the first half, with Maria Coto's header crashing against the crossbar.

Las Ticas finally broke through for their first goal of the tournament in the 47th minute when Herrera tapped home from close range.

Herrera had a second shot in the net with a smart 68th-minute finish but it was ruled out for offside.

Kundananji's late strike sparked wild scenes amongst the Zambia players and supporters.
