Olivia Gadecki is among three Australians within one win of making the US Open main draw but it's been a day of disappointment for former quarter-finalist John Millman.
Resuming at one set all after inclement weather forced the postponement of play on Friday (AEST), Gadecki quickly gained a decisive break to beat American Louisa Chirico 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 in her second-round outing.
The 20-year-old will face US veteran Emina Bektas for a place in the main draw at Flushing Meadows for the first time.
Gadecki joined Kim Birrell, James Duckworth and Marc Polmans in edging towards a spot in the US Open singles in New York.
Birrell, who has taken the Australian women's No.1 ranking during the injury-enforced layoffs of Ajla Tomljanovic and Daria Saville, will play American Fiona Crawley in the final round of qualifying on Saturday (AEST).
Polmans faces young American Zachary Zvajda, while Duckworth succumbed 6-2 6-2 to Kazakhstan's Timofey Skatov on Friday.
Five years after stunning the great Roger Federer en route to the last eight in New York, Millman crashed out with a 2-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 second-round qualifying loss to Italy's world No.377 Stefano Travaglia.
Priscilla Hon also fell at the second hurdle, 6-3 6-1 to Japan's Himeno Sakatsume.
