England hot-shots Bowen, Watkins could face Socceroos

Jarrod Bowen and Ollie Watkins are back in the England fold with the in-form strikers in line to get a run against the Socceroos in the prestige international friendly at Wembley.

The pair have been drafted back in by England boss Gareth Southgate ahead of the friendly against Australia on October 13, effectively a warm-up for the hosts before their 2024 European Championship qualifier against Italy at the same national stadium in London four days later.

Bowen, back in the squad for the first time since last September, has been flying for West Ham, the leading home-based marksman, having scored five Premier League goals to sit behind only Manchester City's goal machine Erling Haaland (8) and Tottenham's Son Heung-min (6) in the scoring charts.

Watkins, meanwhile, has snaffled four in his last two league games for Aston Villa, including a hat-trick against Brighton, and returns to action with the injured Newcastle attacker Callum Wilson sidelined.

Southgate, with plenty of riches to choose from, also has captain Harry Kane, on song for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, to call on to test the Socceroos' defence if he fancies.

The Australians could face Spurs' James Maddison too, with the Spurs' signing enjoying a spectacular star to the season under the Socceroos' former boss Ange Postecoglou.

Graham Arnold's side, though, won't be up against Chelsea's Raheem Sterling, who's again been left out the squad after not having been selected since England's World Cup quarter-final exit in Qatar last year.

Asked about Sterling's omission, Southgate made it obvious that Bowen is likely to get an outing against the Socceroos.

"We have added Jarrod Bowen in those wide areas, he's scored five in seven games and is playing really well," said Southgate. "With the Australia game, there's the opportunity to learn some different things."

"Ollie has started the season well. He is in good form and obviously coming in on a high ... His team are playing well and he's playing for a team that are really well coached and they are in a good moment."

Bowen last played for England in June 2022 in their Nations League campaign, while Watkins, who has scored two goals for England, has not played for his country since March last year.
