More than 500,000 households and businesses in Queensland will have access to faster internet speeds after the completion of NBN infrastructure upgrades.
Whether it's gaming, streaming, or work-related connectivity, approximately 68 per cent of Queensland's fixed-line households and small businesses are eligible for the National Broadband Network's fastest speeds.
It comes following a $2.4 billion investment in October 2022 by the federal government to expand full-fibre NBN access to more than 1.5 million premises.
Some 660,000 of those residences are in rural and regional communities across Australia.
Areas of greater Brisbane like Logan and the Redlands are now available for faster plans following fibre network upgrades.
Federal Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said access to the internet is just like running electricity and water: essential.
"500,000 premises across Queensland can already order an upgrade, and our Government is working hard to ensure even more households and businesses can enjoy the benefits of a fibre connection," she said.
“Faster NBN speeds will allow the whole family to be online at the same time, whether it be videoconferencing for work, enjoying high definition movies or next level gaming.
With an average of 21 devices connected to home internet, Jane McNamara from the NBN said infrastructure needs to keep up with surging demand.
"We are consuming three times more data than we were six years ago, and NBN is delivering more fibre to homes," she said.
The Queensland government has committed $250 million on improved internet infrastructure in key parts of the state, particularly the regions, to create the largest publicly owned regional fibre optic network in Australia.
It is hoped the program will boost internet speeds by up to 100 times in regional areas and provide improved mobile phone coverage.
