The disqualified driver behind a deadly head-on crash near the Victorian city of Geelong has been charged and had his parole cancelled.
The 28-year-old North Shore man was allegedly speeding and overtaking other motorists on the Hamilton Highway in Stonehaven, about 10km west of Geelong, in the lead-up to Wednesday night's crash.
Police allege his car, a white Holden Berlina, swerved onto the opposite side of the highway and smashed head-on into a red Holden Barina.
A 12-year-old girl, a rear seat passenger in the second car, died at the scene.
A seven-year-old girl, also sitting in the back of that car, was taken to hospital with serious upper body injuries but her condition has since improved to stable.
The Barina's driver, a 36-year-old woman and a 38-year-old male passenger were taken to Geelong Hospital in a serious condition.
All four family members were from the Victorian town of Lismore, about 100km west of Geelong.
The Berlina driver was taken to Geelong Hospital in a stable condition, while his passenger, a 21-year-old North Shore man, was in a critical condition.
Major crash detectives charged the driver on Saturday with breaching of parole, driving while suspended, dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing serious injury.
His parole has been cancelled and he is set to face Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday.
The charges come after a separate head-on crash on the Maroondah Highway at Coldstream on Thursday afternoon which left a primary school-age child dead and another seriously injured.
