A woman was fatally stabbed in her Sydney home after an argument with a friend ended in murder, police allege.

Erin Mullavey, 42, was discovered slumped in the living area of her Merrylands apartment on the evening of Easter Sunday.

Her 38-year-old husband was found performing CPR on her body after worried neighbours called police just before midnight to report concerns for Ms Mullavey's welfare.

After a four-month investigation, a 32-year-old man has been charged with her murder.

The man was arrested about 10am on Tuesday and was remanded in custody at Auburn Police Station.

He is due to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday.

Police will allege the man - who was known to Erin - attended her apartment on the night of the murder after a conflict had escalated, then attacked her with a bladed instrument.

The man then fled the scene on foot, before riding off on a black and red mountain bike, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty told reporters on Tuesday.

It is believed that, as he fled, the man discarded the clothes he was wearing, including a grey hooded jumper with a distinctive logo on the back.

Ms Mullavey's husband Nic Gilbert said he arrived home on the night of April 9 and pressed the doorbell but no one answered.

Assuming his wife was asleep, he said he threw a rock at the window to get her attention, before using a bin to climb over the balcony when there was again no response.

"(I) walked into the biggest f***ing nightmare," he told media at the time.

"I walked through the bedroom, Erin was on her back and it looked like she was choking on blood."

Mr Gilbert said he tried to resuscitate his wife, performing CPR before police officers arrived at the Newman Street unit.

"I feel like I let her parents down. I feel like I should've been there," he said.
