A Darwin man has been given a six-year jail sentence for child abuse offences including possessing sexually explicit images of toddlers.
The 41-year-old pleaded guilty in June to 11 offences, including producing, accessing and possessing child abuse material and was sentenced in the Northern Territory Supreme Court on Friday.
He will be eligible for parole in April 2027, after already serving 12 months imprisonment.
The man was arrested by Australian Federal Police officers in September last year after 49 reports from the United States’ National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about an online user in the NT sending child abuse material via social media.
Police located more than 5000 images of toddlers and young victims stored on the man’s SD card and mobile devices.
AFP Superintendent Greg Davis said the creation or possession of child abuse material had long-lasting impacts on the lives of those victimised.
“Investigations such as this should serve as a serious warning that law enforcement has zero tolerance for child exploitation and child sexual abuse in any form," he said.
