Fixing a leaking tap or getting on a social housing waitlist will be easier under a once-in-a-generation reform.
Homes NSW, to be launched on Friday, brings maintenance, tenant management and homelessness services under one roof.
The agency will also be charged with reversing the long-term decline in social housing availability, which has sunk to 4.1 per cent of the national housing market.
A failure of social and affordable home building to keep up with population growth in NSW in recent decades has left 57,000 singles and families languishing on the state's social housing waitlist, some for several years.
The new agency would be the driver of reform to the social and affordable housing sector and make for better neighbourhoods, Housing Minister Rose Jackson said
"For too long, social housing in this state has been neglected - simple issues such as a leaking tap or even the ability to register on the waitlist have been unnecessarily complicated," she said in a statement.
"That’s why this overhaul is needed.
"We're breaking the chains of bureaucracy and empowering our tenants, as well as those who are in need of emergency housing, or on the social housing waitlist."
Homes NSW will oversee the return of the public housing maintenance call centre to public hands.
It will also be charged with turning around the rising number of rough sleepers in NSW.
