The parents of a two-year-old girl have been charged with murder after allegedly denying her medical treatment before she died from an illness.
The toddler, Diana Jane Hanbury, from North Mackay was taken by her mother to Mackay Base Hospital on December 29, 2022, but she was already dead.
Detective Superintendent Darrin Shadlow alleged Diana had been sick for some time and was denied medical intervention by her parents, ultimately leading to her death.
After a 14-month investigation, Queensland detectives have charged the girl's mother, 38, and father, 37, with one count each of murder and responsibility to have a birth registered.
"Reckless indifference is the reason for the charges of murder," Det Supt Shadlow said.
He said the parents had other children who were removed from their care shortly after Diana's death.
The man and woman will appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Earlier in the police investigation, CCTV was released of the toddler being carried in a harness on a woman's back through a local chemist and supermarket in the hours before her death.
Police released the footage in a bid to gain information from the public.
