Phoenix shake off virus to focus on Glory ALW clash

Wellington have avoided a team-wide wipe-out and are ready to rediscover their A-League Women (ALW) winning ways against Perth.

The Phoenix were met with an unexpected hurdle when a virus ran through their camp after a 2-1 defeat to Melbourne City last time out.

Wellington return to their Porirua Park home to host the Glory on Saturday with only a week off for respite, but coach Paul Temple says no players have been sidelined by the illness.

Midfielder Amelia Abbott is the only player ruled out, joining long-term injured pair Rebecca Lake (foot) and Ella McCann (knee) as spectators.

"It was quite crazy after Melbourne, we had a pretty bad virus go through the team so everyone was suffering a little bit," Temple said on Friday.

"We’re feeling good now and ready to roll.

"Amelia Abbott has picked up a really minor muscular thing so she’s not available for selection, but outside of that everyone is good.

"I think we're pretty refreshed now."

Star American import Maya McCutcheon added: "Yes, I'm good for the game.

"If you would have asked me a couple days ago, it would have been a different story."

Temple is urging his players to go full-throttle against Perth. His 'Nix side sit one point outside the top six in seventh place after losing their opening three games.

The Glory are ninth on eight points and are licking their wounds following a 1-0 home defeat to Central Coast.

"I just want to see us continue to progress in terms of how we’re trying to play," Temple said.

"I want to see us scoring more goals. We're starting to put some good performances in now.

"We've had a good December against some real strong opposition, so now it's that kind of solidarity in terms of just picking up regular points, that consistency."

Western United kick off round 10 ALW action by hosting Newcastle on Friday.

Wellington play Perth in the first game on Saturday, followed by matches between Central Coast and Adelaide United, and Brisbane Roar and Canberra United.

Defending champions Sydney FC, dead-last on the table, then take on league leaders Melbourne City before Melbourne Victory close out the round on Sunday against Western Sydney.
