Police still don't know how many people were involved in the execution-style shooting of a suspected mafia figure in suburban Melbourne as they appeal for dashcam footage from the area.
John Peter Latorre, 64, was shot dead about 4.30am on Tuesday at his home in Greenvale, about 20km north of Melbourne, as he walked onto his driveway to go to work.
Mr Latorre, a fruit and vegetable wholesaler, is reported to have links to Melbourne's Calabrian mafia.
Detectives are still unsure how many people were involved in the targeted shooting or how they made their escape after the early morning attack.
"This shooting was particularly concerning for police given it occurred in such a publicly violent manner," Detective Senior Sergeant Danny Travaglini said.
Investigators are looking at several leads including links to organised crime groups, as they remain on high alert for potential revenge attacks.
Local police units have been conducting regular patrols of the area in the days following the fatal shooting.
Authorities have been reviewing CCTV footage to identify any vehicles that were in the area in the lead up to and shortly after the shooting.
Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who travelled through Greenvale or Gladstone Park, particularly in the vicinity of Mickleham Road, between 2am and 6am on Tuesday, Sgt Travaglini said.
"From some of the footage we’ve obtained, it appears there was quite a bit of traffic already in the area on the morning of the shooting," he said.
“We’re hoping this may lead to further avenues of enquiry in relation to our offenders and how they travelled to and from the victim’s house.
"Any small detail could prove crucial in this investigation."
Any information about who was involved or the motivation behind the shooting can be provided anonymously.
Mr Latorre's brother Vincent, who visited the scene of the shooting on Tuesday, is also suspected of being involved in mafia activity after he was jailed for more than a decade in 2009 for blackmailing business rivals.
An inquest in 2007 found Vincent Latorre had either killed or aided in the death of 20-year-old Rocco Iaria, whose body was found dumped in an occupied grave.
