A regional community is mourning an "unimaginable tragedy" after a three-year-old boy was found dead following a caravan fire.
Emergency services were called to Lake View Street in Boort, north-central Victoria, about 5.50pm on Thursday after reports a caravan had caught fire.
After firefighters extinguished the blaze, the child's body was found inside the caravan.
Victoria Police on Friday confirmed the toddler was from the Greater Bendigo area, about one hour's drive south of Boort.
Arson and Explosives Squad detectives have been called to the scene as the police investigation continues.
"At this stage we don’t have any updates regarding the fire as the investigation remains ongoing," a police spokeswoman said.
"Officers are aware of the impact that such a tragic incident has on family, community members and first responders and will ensure that welfare services are in place."
Boort District Health CEO Donna Doyle encouraged members of the community to seek help at the hospital, which has mental health resources available.
"It is an unimaginable tragedy and the family are totally devastated and wrapping each other up in love and support at this time," she told local media on Friday.
"But ask that you respect their privacy while they process everything that's happened in the last 24 hours."
Police have asked anyone with information to come forward.
Boort is a small town with a population of about 900, but in the summer months it becomes a popular spot for holidaymakers.
Police are also investigating the death of a boy in the state's east.
The boy was seen in a river at Cobbannah, near a camp site off Angusvale Track, on Friday about 11.20am.
He was found dead about 2.50pm.
