The star-studded United States basketball team have clinched a quarterfinal spot at the Paris Olympics, dispatching South Sudan by 17 points.

Bam Adebayo scored 18 points and Kevin Durant 14 for the Americans, who took the game 103-86 on the back of a 25-4 first half run.

Nuni Omot led South Sudan with 24 points, while Carlik Jones scored 18 and Bul Kuol added 16.

The African side is laden with NBL talent, Kuol playing with the  Sydney Kings while Majok Deng suits up for the Tasmania Jackjumpers.

Both saw plenty of game time in their side's first up 90-79 win over Puerto Rico which came after they lost to the US by just one point in a pre-Olympics clash.

South Sudan opened well on Wednesday, leading 7-6 and 10-8 before the US took control.

Durant made a 3-pointer with about a minute to go in the opening quarter for the first double-digit lead before Adebayo scored inside to cap what was a 25-4 run and a 33-14 lead.

South Sudan cut the margin to 10 in the third, but the US took a 73-57 edge into the final 10 minutes.

Despite the loss, Omot said they learned a lot about themselves and their ability to compete with the world's best.

“A lot of people have told me that I belong to play with those guys,” Omot said.

“I think tonight shows my ability of what I'm capable of doing. ... the Olympics is the 12 best teams that are competing right now.

"Just to be able to be one of the 12 teams is an honour. I think people are going to know who I am now. And it's not about me. But people are going to know who South Sudan is.”

US star Stephen Curry said South Sudan definitely has his respect.

“They fact that they're on this stage and won their first game a couple of days go. So who knows how far they can take it?" Curry said. “You're rooting for them, except when we play them.”

In other matches, Serbia romped to a 107-66 victory over Puerto Rico at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille.

Nikola Jokic starred with 14 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists.

The US win has them join Canada, France and Germany in the quarterfinals.

There are seven teams still alive for the other four quarterfinal spots, including Australia.

Only Puerto Rico, who face the Americans on Saturday, have been eliminated.
