Walters office chat where Broncos' Arthars edged Oates

The Office was a smash hit TV comedy show but when two Brisbane wingers emerged from coach Kevin Walters' office last week it was Jesse Arthars who was smiling.

Arthars is living proof that getting called into Walters’ Broncos HQ sanctuary can be a good thing.

Fellow winger Corey Oates may beg to differ after both were summonsed before the 26-0 qualifying final win over Melbourne.

Walters told 25-year-old Arthars he was in and 201-game veteran Oates that he was out of the starting team when both made their appearance.

"Yeah, in his office," Arthars said when asked about the moment.

"That’s where you go when Kev’s got something to say to you. He just says 'meet me in my office'. That’s how it goes'."

Walters, a huge fan of Oates and what he has done for the club, said afterwards it was a tough decision to make. Arthars won the day on the back of the 17 games he played in the regular season where he did everything asked and more on the way to making 14 line breaks and scoring eight tries.

Oates had played just nine games due to injury and has had a barren run this year on the try-scoring front.

Arthars said he had a "pretty cruisy" mentality about the visit and a "whatever happens, happens" philosophy in general on life.

"It’s obviously a tough decision for Kevvie," he said.

"Everyone wants to be in the team at this time of the year and those are the hard conversations that you’re going to have.

"As a head coach in the finals, it’s probably not any easier.

"Kevvie’s handled it really well. There’s been times in the season where Oatesy’s gone in and I’ve sat out, and vice versa."

Arthars said Oates’ response had been exemplary and that there was no-one kicking stones at the Broncos ahead of Saturday week’s preliminary final clash at Suncorp Stadium.

"Everyone’s attitude at the club, whether they’re playing or not, has been a big factor in why we’re in the finals," he said.

"As long as the boys keep staying humble and working hard, I’m sure we’re going to have a lot of fun."

Arthars spent a stint last year with the Warriors on loan before returning to Brisbane this year in top form.

"I’m happy on and off the field," he said.

"I was stoked to be back with the boys and I got re-signed (until the end of 2026) halfway through the season."
