Fire authorities are warning Victorians to take extreme care after losing control of 115 burn-offs over the past month.
Private burn-offs caused some of the recent fires in East Gippsland and Berringa near Ballarat, the Country Fire Authority said.
But the blaze at Briagolong, which burnt about 17,500 hectares, was still under investigation, as was a separate fire in Loch Sport.
CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan encouraged Victorians to clean up their properties through burn-offs but they should take care while doing so.
"It is imperative that residents register their burn-off and check the local conditions on the day, as well as coming days," Mr Heffernan said.
"Conditions can change quickly and fires can get out of control within minutes in hot and windy conditions."
Burn-offs could also flare up days later so it was important to ensure they were fully extinguished, Mr Heffernan said.
"It is also essential you have enough water on hand to put out a fire and we recommend establishing a fire break of no less than three metres cleared of flammable materials," he said.
