A woman has been arrested after a fatal stabbing at a home in regional Victoria.

Police allege the woman stabbed a man at a property in the Ballarat suburb of Mount Helen in western Victoria just before 8am on Saturday.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man, but he died at the scene.

"Officers arrested the woman at the property, who was known to the deceased," a Victoria Police spokesman said.

The relationship between the man and the woman has not been released.

Ballarat's rate of family violence incidents is 46 per cent higher than the state average, according to Crime Statistics Agency data.

There were 2143.2 family violence cases reported per 100,000 people in the year to July 2024, compared to 1465 statewide.

Police have set up a crime scene at the property and say the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information or CCTV footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
