Would-be carjacker picks driver who fought back and won

A man who allegedly attempted a carjacking in Melbourne got more than he bargained for when his intended victim held him down until police arrived.

Officers were called to a St Kilda intersection about 8.55pm on Wednesday following reports of an assault and scuffle.

Police were told a 51-year-old driver was stopped at the lights when a man opened his door and demanded he get out.

The driver refused and was allegedly assaulted before he locked onto the man to try to get his car keys back.

During the scuffle a witness raised the alarm and told the driver he was calling triple zero.

The St Kilda East man held onto his alleged assailant and restrained him with help from other people nearby, until police arrived.

A 37-year-old Mordialloc man was arrested and has been charged with attempted carjacking, common law assault, stating a false name and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

He is set to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
