Germany's Georg Zimmermann claimed the best win of his career for an unexpected victory in stage six of the Criterium du Dauphine.
The young German had been part of a 14-man breakaway but he appeared to have run out of gas on the final ascent after the leading group had been reduced to three.
Mathieu Burgaudeau (Total Energies) overtook him on the short final climb to Crest-Voland and looked certain to win, but Zimmermann, 25, gritted his teeth and outsprinted him to the line.
Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos Grenadiers) finished third.
Australia's Ben O'Connor (AG2R Citroën), who remains second overall to race leader Jonas Vingegaard, was edged out of fourth spot by Giulio Ciccone (Trek Segafredo).
Earlier, Vingegaard attacked his rivals and built a small gap over everyone bar O’Connor. But he was eventually brought back into the GC group, which finished 48 seconds behind Zimmermann (Intermarche).
Australians Jai Hindley and Jack Haig are fifth and sixth overall, respectively.
