Li downs Vukic in all-Australian ATP 250 clash

Li Tu has won the Newport Open's 'battle of Australia' beating countryman and world No.83 Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets at the ATP 250 tournament in Rhode Island.

Ranked No.252 in the world, the win was Adelaide-based Li's first over a top-100 player, and his maiden ATP-level main-draw victory.

Having come through qualifying, 27-year-old Li beat Vukic 6-3 7-6 (8-6) to progress to the round of 16, where he will face another top-100 player in the shape of the USA's Mackenzie McDonald.

James Duckworth also got off to winning ways in Newport, dropping the first set but hitting 14 aces on his way to beating France's world No.86 Constant Lestienne 5-7 6-4 7-5.

It was not such a successful day for Australia's other men in first round action.

Max Purcell, seeded sixth for the tournament, crashed out at the hands of Gijs Brouwer from the Netherlands, losing in straight sets 4-6 1-6.

Qualifier Alex Bolt, in the main draw of an ATP-level event for the first time in almost two years, stretched big-serving American John Isner to three sets before losing 4-6 6-2 3-6.

A blast from tennis's past has shown up at the Nordea Open in Sweden, with Bjorn Borg's son Leo claiming his first win on the ATP Tour.

The 20-year-old world No.437 made the most of a wild-card opportunity on home soil to beat countryman Elias Ymer 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in the first round.

Borg's father Bjorn is one of the sport's greatest stars, having won 11 grand slam titles in the 1970s and early 1980s before retiring aged 25.
