The parents of a young man who was stabbed to death while still wearing his wetsuit before a surfing session have pleaded with the person responsible to hand themselves in.
Kye Schaefer was stabbed multiple times in a car park at Coffs Harbour, on the NSW north coast, after he arrived to go surfing at the beach early on May 2.
He died after being rushed to Coffs Harbour hospital.
Homicide police have described the attack as random, unprovoked and savage.
No one has been charged over the killing, although investigators have been looking into possible links to a robbery nearby at close to the same time.
Mr Schaefer's father, Tony, encouraged whoever was responsible for the stabbing to come forward.
“Just be honest and own up to your mistakes in life … everyone makes them,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Mother Pam said the family had been left heartbroken since their son's death as she paid tribute to the local community for helping them through the tough period.
“No words can describe how we’re feeling, the sheer loss of our faith in humanity,” she said.
“The love and support of our family and friends have been absolutely phenomenal, that’s what’s kept us out of this black hole.”
An online fundraiser for Mr Schaefer's family has raised more than $26,000 to help pay for the costs of his funeral.
He has been described as a keen athlete and skilled soccer player who would be "profoundly missed' by his family and friends.
Ms Schaefer called on any witnesses or people with information to contact police, even if they were not sure if what they knew was important.
Detectives have previously appealed for information about a man seen riding a bicycle in the area at the time.
